Monuments Tour1>
The commemorative role of historic monuments appears to have jumped back into the limelight, particularly considering the recent removal of certain controversial statues in the USA. Austria has its fair share of such debatable monuments as well. Although the Habsburg Empire ceased to exist more than a century ago, its visible traces are still an inseparable part of the Danube metropolis… This tour will introduce you to stone-carved images of some of the most powerful men (and women) of this famous imperial dynasty, past the monuments to the uprising bourgeoisie and the statues honouring the Holy Saints – a part of the omnipresent sacral essence of Catholic Austria – and all the way to the modern memorials that sometimes raise eyebrows and provoke heated arguments.
